The Stregoni Benfici is an Italian vampire who, unlike other vampires, doesn't drink human blood. This type of vampire gorges itself on the blood of animals. This vampire was intentionally created for the book Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer, to portray Carlisle Cullen, the original "vegetarian vampire". Carlisle is born in 1640, in London, to an Anglican priest of a father. This was a time of religious upheaval, and many humans were hunted, being accused of either being vampires, werewolves, or witches. These people were wrongly accused, and killed. His father grew older, and Carlisle, being only twenty-three, assumed his role. One night, while he was leading an "angry mob" to a real vamire coven, he was attacked by a vampire and left to die on the streets. Knowing he would be rejected by society, he hid himself and silently endured the painful transformation, emerging as a vampire. Horrified by what he had become, he tried killing himself many different ways, but all failed due to his power. One night, unable to endure hunger any longer, he fed on some passing deer. Subsequently realizing he could avoid feeding on humans, he committed himself to resisting his blood lust and to becoming a doctor.
Carlisle then spen some time with the Volturi (page coming up soon). Unable to deal with their lifestyle, he then traveled to the New World, A.K.A. North America, and his future was set in stone from there.
Carlisle has subsequently turned four humans into vampires: Edward Cullen (originally Edward Masen), Esme Cullen (originally Esme Platt, then Esme Evenson), Rosalie Hale/Cullen (original maiden name Hale), and Emmett Cullen (originally Emmett McCarty).
